This is a classic wilderness pack-in elk hunt utilizing horses and mules to access our backcountry camps. Services include horses, packing of client's gear and game, 2:1 hunter to guide ratio, trophy/meat care back to Ft. Collins, and meals/lodging during the wilderness stay. Lodging is at a camp with a wall tent, tack tent, and a fresh water spring. A maximum of six hunters per trip keeps success and service high. Since we do not normally run both guided hunts and drop camp hunts at the same time, we use our empty drop camps as spike camps to spread out the six hunters and the hunting pressure to different camps. Two hunters will hunt from each of three camps. Most outfitters run both guided hunts and drop camps at the same time but we normally do not.
We run a 50% to 84% success rate for muzzle and rifle seasons for 5x5 and larger bulls which is considered good for a wilderness hunt. Archery success is 33-66% with near 100% shooting. The major factors affecting hunter success include hunter physical conditioning, marksmanship, and weather. Get in shape! Unlike many other areas of Colorado, this wilderness permit area bordering Rocky Mountain National Park produces some 300+ B&C/P&Y class bulls each year. Our hunters will take several 300+ class bulls each year but we don’t advertise this hunt as a trophy hunt. The best bull of 2014 gross scored 397 B&C. The best bull of 2013 scored 353. The area is best for elk but we occasionally harvest some nice bucks. Elk tags and deer tags are by application but can be drawn each year as we are the only outfitter allowed in this wilderness area for elk/deer and non-residents may receive up to 35% of the tags. Landowner tags are available for an additional $500 for muzzleloader and rifle and just $350 for archery if you miss the drawing deadline in April.
